Dioctyl phthalate (DOP, DEHP), is clear, colourless, viscous liquid with a slight, characteristic odor. Soluble in ethanol, ether, mineral oil and the majority of organic solvents. Immiscible with water, resistant to hydrolysis and air oxygen activity. It possesses good plasticizing properties. Being produced on a massive scale by many companies, it has acquired many names and acronymns, including BEHP, di-2-ethyl hexyl phthalate, as well as dioctyl phthalate (DOP).
